Biography:
She studied Visual Arts at Universidad Veracruzana, and continued her art education in École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, in Paris, and art therapy applied to marginalized groups in Universidad Complutense in Madrid. She has been awarded the grants Young Creators of CONACULTA, the Puffin Foundation and the Education Program of INBA. Resident artist in the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada, Cité Internationale des Arts in París, and Venezuela.
She has been a teacher in Universidad Autónoma de Morelos, Centro de la Imagen, Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Escuela Superior de Arte de Yucatán, and several social art projects for battered women, prisoners, indigenous children and young migrants. Among these projects, we can mention "Yucatan seen by its Children" sponsored by INBA in 2004 and "Migration seen by Children" sponsored by UNICEF in 2005.
She has exhibited her work in the most important cities of Mexico and abroad. Her work is in the collections of Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Japan), the Lehigh University (Pennsylvania), the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston and Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán.
She is currently the director of Fototeca de Veracruz.
Statement:
For the Wedding Announcement Series, my starting point was finding old family photos and vintage photos of bazaars. I manipulated these pictures and left behind clues about the stories of the photographed subjects and the stories of women in a conservative society.
In this series, as I have done in previous work, I explore the women’s stereotypes in a patriarchal society. I question the cliché of the wedding photo as the representation of the maximum possible happiness that a woman can achieve and I reveal the inevitable deterioration of the relationship within the marriage. |
