Carlos Jurado

Biography:

He was born in 1927 in the state of Chiapas. In 1944 he initiated his painting studies in the school of Fine Arts with outstanding teachers such as Antonio Ruiz "El Corzo" and Maria Izquierdo. In 1951 he worked in some indigenous regions of the country, producing material for education. Throughout the years he has carried out diverse activities both in the artistic production and the academia. In 1973 he initiated his photographic activity and held positions at the level of director in Universidad Veracruzana, where he established, for the first time in Mexico, the major in Photography. He currently works freelance for the first time in his workshop.

Statement:

Carlos Jurado considers photography to be the product of a magical act. He works mainly with pinhole cameras. With this system he tries to obtain suggestive ambiences and uncommon atmospheres. He has also worked using old methods such as the bi-chromated gum, blueprint, sepia prints, etc. Carlos Jurado constructs his own cameras, as well as some of the necessary production equipment.
